Galaga '88 introduces a variety of new enemies and behaviors. However, refraining completely from touching any controls for the duration of a Challenging Stage awards a 'secret bonus' ranging in value from 10000 to 25000 points, and equal to the 'special bonus' which would have been awarded for destroying all forty enemy aliens instead. As in Galaga, the objective is to destroy all forty enemies before they fly away off the screen.

In any given Challenging Stage, both the design of the enemies and their dancing formations shall vary according to the player's current Dimension.

There are six such stages to engage in any full game, and each begins with the on-screen announcement 'That's Galactic Dancin'!' and has its own YM2151-generated song to which the enemy formations dance. With the exception of the third and eighth, each World culminates in a Cha Cha Stage. The starship Galaga accelerates between Stages and Worlds and even to higher dimensions (go to the section on Dimensional Travel below to find out more).

The game is divided into a series of 2 Stages distributed through eight Worlds. The gameplay in Galaga '88 is built on the same premise as that of the original Galaga game, but is in many ways more complex and more difficult.

First ported on the NEC PC Engine, it was later released on the North American TurboGrafx-16 under the name Galaga '90 and the Sega Game Gear in Japan under the name of Galaga'91, and in Europe under the name of Galaga 2. The game runs on Namco System 1 hardware. Although it was well received, fewer cabinets of this game were produced than of Galaga and Gaplus. It features significantly improved graphics over the previous games in the series, including detailed backgrounds, larger enemies and greater ship details. It is the third sequel for Galaxian (following Galaga, and Gaplus). Galaga '88 is a 1987 fixed shooter arcade game by Namco. Unfortunately, this game is currently available only in this version. To play this game, you need to enable JavaScript on your PC. In addition, many different kinds of obstacles appear throughout the game, including blue crystals, boulders and green blobs. This game is emulated by JavaScript emulator NeptunJS. While vulnerable, this enemy can be destroyed in one hit, scoring bonus points. When one of these enemies starts its dive, it will flip over and expose its vulnerable side, then flip over again and become invincible while it moves back up the screen, then flip one more time and finish its dive. Later in the game some enemies are equipped with armor that renders them invincible while in formation. Another type of enemy takes at least five hits to destroy, and it grows larger with each consecutive hit, making it both a larger target and allowing it to act as a shield to other enemies. These creatures take multiple hits to destroy in flight (just one hit in formation), and their main attack pattern is to move about halfway down the screen, stop, fire multiple shots at once, and then fly straight down off the bottom of the screen. Some enemies arrive in spherical "eggs" and emit a loud, high-pitched noise when hit. Others explode in a brilliant shower of fireworks when destroyed, and occasionally these enemies drop a small formation of much smaller enemies that "wiggle" their way down the screen. Some enemies now have the ability to combine into a much larger single enemy that takes multiple shots to destroy. The player can begin with one ship with two in reserve or start right out with a dual ship (but only one in reserve). The objective is to shoot all 40 enemies before they disappear, for a bonus of at least 10,000 points. Periodically the player encounters Challenging Stages, which are set to music and feature "dancing" enemies. Galaga '88 takes the basic gameplay of Galaga and adds higher-quality graphics, triple ship abilities, parsec progression, power-ups, asteroids, bosses and other enhancements.
